چکیده

In order to resolve the disadvantages of conventional crutch designs (i.e. underarm and forearm), a novel crutch design is presented with the name of 21 Century Crutch. Prior the design, human natural treadmill walking is monitored by a 3D Motion Capture System and acquired a reference end–foot trajectory with a ‘teardrop shape’. Considering the design objectives, natural human walking and comfort, and other factors such as load capacity and weight of the device, the final design was determined. In order to satisfy the design objectives, a kinematic synthesis previously worked by Robson and McCarthy [14] is applied to test if the end–foot trajectory of designed crutch smoothly follows the desired reference, ‘teardrop shape’ in the vicinity of two specified task points, heel strike and toe off. For that reason the leg was synthesized and animated in Mathematica as a RR planar kinematic chain, where the first hinge joint/fixed pivot was located at the hip and the other hinge joint/moving pivot is at the knee joint. A prototype of the final design was fabricated and its performance was tested by 2 mph treadmill walking.

Upper Extremity Kinetics during Lofstrand Crutch-Assisted Gait in Children

UPPER EXTREMITY KINETICS DURING LOFSTRAND CRUTCH-ASSISTED GAIT IN CHILDREN Neha Bhagchandani, B.E. Marquette University, 2010 Complete biomechanical analysis helps evaluate the motion during various gait patterns for the upper and lower extremities. Extensive studies have been performed to evaluate unassisted gait patterns, but very little has been accomplished for studying assisted motion. Chi...

Elbow moment and forces at the hands during swing-through axillary crutch gait.

We investigated swing-through axillary crutch gait (nonweight bearing on the left lower extremity) to determine the effects of gait speed, crutch length, and handle position on the forces exerted at the hands and on the moments exerted about the elbow joints. Ten healthy subjects, skilled in swing-through crutch gait, walked at three speeds using fitted crutches, at a fixed speed with four diff...

Kinetics during Lofstrand Crutch-assisted Gait in Children with Myelomeningocele

Introduction: Myelomeningocele (MM) is complex disease that often results in functional disability. Studies have shown that approximately 5060% of young adult patients ambulate in the community, with around 20% of these patients using an assistive device, such as Lofstrand crutches [1]. During crutch walking, peak axial loads are a substantial amount of body weight. Literature has shown that lo...

Upper extremity dynamics during Lofstrand crutch-assisted gait in children with myelomeningocele.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE We present a 3-dimensional biomechanical model of the upper extremities to characterize joint dynamics during 2 patterns of Lofstrand crutch-assisted gait in children with myelomeningocele. The upper extremity model incorporates recommendations by the International Society of Biomechanics. METHODS A Vicon motion analysis system (14 cameras) captured the marker patterns. I...

Metabolic energy expenditure during spring-loaded crutch ambulation.

CONTEXT Individuals using traditional axillary crutches to ambulate expend approximately twice as much energy as individuals who perform able-bodied gait. A relatively novel spring-loaded crutch now being marketed may reduce metabolic energy expenditure during crutch ambulation. This idea, however, had not yet been tested. OBJECTIVE To determine whether the novel spring-loaded crutch reduces ...
